Ah, I LOVE the fall. I always have. There is a crispness in the air; a heightened frenzy of excitement to get out and do things before the winter arrives; much as a squirrel feels, searching and storing up his hoard of nuts, I suppose. October is the gateway month leading to Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. The start of good things to come.
And in Minnesota there is certainly no shortage of fun excursions, adventures and outings to take part in. It has been a deeply overcast, rainy fall, but that isn't stopping us.
Here's our bucket list:
-
Visit an apple orchard {Minnetonka Orchard is our favorite with lots of activities for all, great food to make an impromptu picnic, live music, and a family feeling}
-
Take a walk on a cool, windy day while the leaves swirl about and we crunch through piles of dry leaves on the path;
-
Pick out pumpkins to carve and roast the seeds;
-
Go out to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum and soak up all the amazing colors.
-
Find our way through a corn maze. We recently got free tickets to go out to the Twin Cities Harvest Festival and Maze. The weather barely cooperated, but that didn't ruin our fun. The boys had a wonderful time in the huge corn pit, made friends with other kids at the hay bale maze and loved the pumpkin slinger. We all enjoyed navigating our way through the corn maze and taking a hayride out to the pumpkin patch. We even got a {rare} family photo for $10 that was really good! It was definitely worth our drive up to Brooklyn Park;
-
Make caramel apples from apples picked from an orchard;
-
Taking a drive out into the country just about any direction out of the Twin Cities to see the glory of all the golds and reds and browns and oranges and greens is always a good adventure; two of our favorite routes are up to Duluth or down to Lake Pepin area;
-
For a few more weeks, there are still a few chances to enjoy a pizza on a farm. I thought I'd have to give up that tradition, but Red Barn Farm in Northfield has a gluten free crust option. So, we will be heading there before their last pizza pie for the season.
-
Woodlake Nature Center has a fun and friendly and not too frightful Halloween celebration this Saturday. It's always a good time, especially last year when they had the dance party in a meadow at the end of the trick-or-treating trail. I think the parents had as much fun as the kids, maybe more fun; and

This year we are going to make an appearance at one or two of the Halloween Capital of the World's events in Anoka. There activities of all types and fright levels throughout the month of October. So, check the calendar of events and choose one.
In Minnesota, we know that we have to get out and enjoy these shorter, but beautiful days, just as the squirrels do. These days are slipping through our fingers, getting darker and cooler every day. So, what's on your Fall Bucket List? Over and out….
