Since we're celebrating George Washington's birthday and we're pretty much snowed in I thought it would be fun to make cookies with the Darlings this afternoon. We are in need of an activity! I searched George Washington cookies and found this recipe at www.alphabet-soup.net. Amazingly enough I just happen to have all the ingredients since I bought maraschino cherries last week for our Valentine's Day meal.
The Recipe
George Washington Cherry Thumbprint Cookies
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 sticks butter or margarine
2 egg yolks
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
maraschino cherries
Optional: chopped almonds, chocolate chips or other mix-in
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, mix together the vanilla, butter, egg yolks and brown sugar until creamy. Add the flour and salt and mix well.
Have the children roll the dough into 1" balls and place them on greased cookie sheets. Have the children make a thumbprint in each ball and then place a maraschino cherry in each thumbprint. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes. (Makes about 3 dozen cookies)
Variation: I'm going to try adding mini chocolate chips to the dough. I think chopped almonds would be good too. And I'll probably increase the vanilla, as usual.
The Scoop
What are you doing today? Let me know if you make these or another GW cookie or treat. I would love to hear about it. Happy Snowy President's Day! Over and out...
