I am not a Mom, but a proud Hockey Aunt. I have watched my little guy on skates since he was 3. He once said "There is never a bad day to play hockey". He truly loves the sport, hanging with his buddies and the general competition.
What he hates is the pressure from the parents (not just his own) and the way a coach or referee can take the fun out of the game.
Did he start too soon? Maybe, but in MN if you arent on skates by age three you can count yourself out on ever playing for your high school. He has big plans to play for the Gophers and Wild like all kids. Great goals, but as we all know pretty unlikely. Coaches and parents think they need to have organized practice or play everyday. I disagree, I think they learn more in pick-up games. (Watch the documentary "Pond Hockey" it gives great feedback on learning the game on a Pond)

I am happy to say he has also recently taken up LaCrosse. He loves it. I am so happy he has a differnt sport to concentrate on. I think they need variety. But most of all I think they need to be a kid. He needs more time on his bike, on his skateboard and getting into 10 year old trouble.
Regardless if he becomes a Hockey or Lacrosse star, I will be there. Cheering him on, supporting him and just being his biggest fan. That is really what is important in the end. That the people around them are proud to be there no matter how they play; just that they do.

Like your post. We have found team sports to not be a great fit for our kid...but turns out gymnastics is awesome. I agree that one needs to experiment to figure out what really works!
